There were plenty of descriptions of the new "Suicide Squad" trailer that debuted at Comic-Con this weekend (and plenty of bootleg versions, too), but now, the official clip has finally made its way online for your (legal) viewing pleasure.
Earlier reports suggested that the introduction of The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) evoked the biggest reactions from the Comic-Con crowd, and it's not hard to see why. Quinn gets the most screen time of the two in the extended clip, first appearing as an ethereal figure trapped in a cage by Squad assembler Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), dangling from the enclosure like an acrobat; later, she licks the bars in a move that's both sexy and creepy as hell (no doubt the intention of filmmakers).
Waller describes Quinn and co. as "the worst of the worst," explaining that by forming a "taskforce of the most dangerous people on the planet," the U.S. can basically do whatever it wants to the rest of the world, and blame it on the bad guys -- and essentially leave them to die -- if things go south. "We're the patsies," Will Smith's Deadshot tells the rest of the villains. "We're some kind of Suicide Squad."
The trailer is packed with slick shots of the crew defying death (and even battling Batman), sowing chaos and leaving plenty of destruction in their wake. There are firefights, fistfights, car chases, and more -- and then, finally, there's The Joker.
Saving the spookiest for last, the clip ends with the introduction of Leto's iconic character, who utters the line, "I'm not gonna kill ya. I'm just gonna hurt ya really, really bad." He bares his silver teeth and stares straight into the camera with his soulless eyes before the screen goes black, leaving plenty of questions -- and plenty of chills -- in his wake.
Check out the action-packed trailer below. "Suicide Squad" is due in theaters on August 5, 2016.
