Show them the money!
"Stranger Things" won the Captain Obvious award last week by getting a Season 3 renewal. The Netflix series was a breakout hit last year, picking up 18 Emmy nominations, and dominating social media. You can tell a show is popular when a hoodie worn in a few scenes ends up crashing a website right after it goes on sale!
Netflix doesn't release its viewing numbers, but Nielsen managed to track some data, saying 15.8 million viewers watched the "Stranger Things" Season 2 premiere within three days of the October launch. They added that almost 11 million were in the coveted 18-49 demo.
The young "Stranger Things" cast members have become major stars, and The Hollywood Reporter said they are said to be "banding together to renegotiate their contracts for the upcoming seasons."
Will they pull a "Friends" and hold out for big money for all of them as a group?
Sources told THR that Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Millie Bobby Brown (Jane/Eleven), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) each got $30,000 per episode for the first and second seasons with a bonus (of less than six figures) "once it became clear that the show was a phenomenon."
"While the cast is signed for six years, talent reps say a renegotiation will happen in early 2018. One question yet to be addressed is whether the show's breakout, 13-year-old Brown, will negotiate separately from the other young stars."
Millie Bobby Brown was a breakout after Season 1, and everyone still loves her as Eleven, but if anyone needs to be holding out for more $$$ after Season 2 it's Joe Keery. Can you imagine the riots if Steve Harrington didn't return? Use that leverage, Mom!
"Stranger Things" is expected to run for at least four seasons. THR said Netflix wanted Season 3 and Season 4 to film back-to-back to avoid adolescent transitions as the stars age, but the Duffer Brothers and other producers shot that idea down. Season 3 will reportedly pick up around a year after the events of Season 2 -- similar to what Season 2 did after Season 1 -- acknowledging the aging of the characters as well as the cast.
