Colonel Hasegawa:
Esteemed Father, on behalf of all the officers, I would like to invite your church choir to perform and celebrate with us. This is the official invitation.
Shu:
They are asking us to sing at a party tomorrow.
John Miller:
This is a very kind invitation, Mr. Hasegawa. However, unfortunately, the children will not be able to attend.
Colonel Hasegawa:
Why not?
John Miller:
Sir, they're very young. I'm not sure that it is appropriate for them to attend an adults party. As their guardian and protector, that's my responsibility. But we thank you very much.
Colonel Hasegawsa:
I am sorry. This is an order from above. I cannot disobey.
John Miller: [[hell]
Sir. Please think about the girls. I can see that you are man of culture. Last time you played us a beautiful song, for people far from home. You missed the rivers and hills. Please consider that theirs have been destroyed, they have no home, nothing. They are living in ]. With this invitation, you are asking them to celebrate that. I know that you understand. With respect, sir, I cannot allow that. I think that is...I think that is brutal, sir.
Colonel Hasegawa:
Please remember, tomorrow at four in the afternoon, a car will come to pick up the students. I am carrying out military orders.
John Brown:
Mr. Hasegawa, you tell me what will happen at these celebrations. Mr. Hasegawa. You said you posted guards for our security. Have you been keeping these girls locked up until these celebrations? The children cannot go. Mr. Hasegawa. Mr. Hasegawa! The children cannot go! The children cannot go!

Exodus: Gods and Kings - Differences in Agreement Between Friends
Malak:
What do you think of this?
Moses: [carving the stone tablets]
I wouldn't do it if I didn't agree.
Malak:
That's true. I've noticed that about you. You don't always agree with me.
Moses:
Nor you me, I've noticed.
Malak:
Yet here we are, still speaking. But not for much longer. A leader can falter, but stone will endure. These laws will guide them in your stead. If you disagree, you should put down the hammer.

Exodus: Gods and Kings - Tension Between Leaders and Their Followers
Malak:
He's given you what you've asked?
Moses:
Not yet, but his own people are turning against him.
Malak:
And his army?
Moses:
It will.
Malak:
I disagree. Something worse has to happen.
Moses:
I disagree. Anything more would be...
Malak:
Would be what? What were you about to say? Cruel? Inhumane?
Moses:
It's not easy to see the people who I grew up with suffering this much.
Malak:
What about the people you didn't grow up with? What thought did you give to them? You still don't think of them as yours, do you? As long as Rhamses has an army behind him, nothing will change.
Moses:
Anything more is just revenge!
Malak:
Revenge? After 400 years of brutal subjugation! These pharoahs, who imagine they're living gods, they are nothing more than flesh and blood! I want to see them on their knees begging for it to stop!
Moses:
I'm tired of talking with a messenger!
Malak:
General! I have heard Rhamses final threat. So let me tell you what's going to happen next.
Moses: [after being told of God's plan to kill the firstborn of Egypt]

Moses:
Wars of attrition take time.
Malak:
At this rate, it will take years. A generation.
Moses:
I am prepared to fight for that long.
Malak:
I'm not.
Moses:
I thought we were making progress. Now you're impatient after 400 years of slavery.
Malak:
Am I the only one sitting here who's done nothing about it until now?
Moses:
I do know a few things about military action. Still, if you are not going to listen to me, then why did you take me away from my family?
Malak:
I didn't. You did.
Moses:
You don't need me.
Malak:
Maybe not.
Moses:
So what do I do? Nothing?

For now, you can watch.

Moses:
Why?
Malak:
To fight. Why else?
Moses:
Fight who? For what?
Malak:

The Big Short - The Burden of Business and Personal Loss
Michael Burry: [Final letter to his investors]
I met my wife through Match.com. My profile said, "I am a medical student with only one eye, an awkward social manner, and $145,000 in student loans." She wrote back, "You're just what I've been looking for." She meant "honest", so let me be honest. Making money is not like what I thought it would be. This business kills the part of life that is essential, the part that has nothing to do with business. For the past two years, my insides have felt like they've been eating themselves. All the people that I respected won't talk to me anymore, except through lawyers. People want an authority to tell them how to value things, but they choose this authority not based on facts or results. They choose it because it seems authoritative and familiar. And I am not, nor ever have been, "familiar." So...so I have come to the sullen realization that I must close down the fund. Sincerely, Michael J. Burry, M.D.

You answer me this: what terrorist attack would you have let go forward so you wouldn't seem like a mean and nasty fella? I will not apologize for keeping your families safe. Because they just want to please their boss who wants to please his boss who wants to please his boss. And they hate themselves for it. But deep down, who they hate even more are guys like you. Reign of Fire - Understanding Our Past to Shape the Future
Quinn Abercromby:
I've kept this for years, because someday it will be up to you. I don't want you to be afraid. I want you to understand. Knowledge is the only weapon we've got left. In the beginning, it was ignorance that destroyed us. I saw the first, but soon the world saw millions. No one knew how they spawned so fast, they swarmed like locusts, burning everything in their path, driven by one purpose: to feed. Even then, we couldn't believe they were real. Ancient man had made them into myths, but nature had made something far more terrible. Too late, our scientists discovered their true identity: a species which had burned the dinosaurs to dust, whose ash had brought on ice ages, who in eons past had scorched the world clean of life, then starved and slept, waiting for the Earth to replenish itself, waiting to start their cycle anew. Our weapons shot fire back at them, yet for every one of them killed, a hundred took its place. They seemed invulnerable. We could only look on as our leaders used their greatest arsenal to destroy them. But in the end, we only helped them, till the world burned, and the few of us that were left fled the cities, found shelter where we could. You have to understand our past, because you will decide our future. They're starving now, and they're more dangerous than ever. But we have to go on. We have to outlast them. Only one species is getting out of this alive.

3:10 to Yuma - Dodge City: A Place of Contrasts
William Evans:
You ever been to Dodge?
Ben Wade:
Yes, indeed. Meanest, most beautiful dirty city there ever was. Saloon was just overflowing with cattle drivers, and road agents, prospectors, gunslingers, gamblers, and women. Women who'll do things to you, you'll never forget.
Doc Potter:
They'll give you a disease you'll never forget.
Ben Wade:
Money in your pocket in Dodge City, you can have everything a man ever wished for. Everything a man comes to need. I got there on my own as a boy not much bigger than you.
Dan Evans:
And how many men you killed since then, Wade? How many families you destroyed?
Ben Wade:

3:10 to Yuma - The Burden of a Fallen Hero

I ain't never been no hero, Wade. The only battle I seen, we was in retreat. My foot got shot off by one of my own men. You try telling that story to your boy. See how he looks at you then.

3:10 to Yuma - Frustration and Despair in Hardship
Dan Evans: [to Alice]
If I don't go, we got to pack up and leave, and God knows where, without a prayer, dirt-poor. Now I'm tired, Alice. I am tired of watching my boys go hungry. I'm tired of the way that they look at me. I'm tired of the way that you don't. I've been standing on one leg for three damn years, waiting for God to do me a favor. And He ain't listening.

American Psycho - The Futility of Self-Reflection
Patrick Bateman:
There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it, I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone; in fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis. My punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself; no new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing.

American Psycho - Confessions of a Disturbed Serial Killer
Patrick Bateman:
Howard! It's Bateman, Patrick Bateman. You're my lawyer so I think you should know I've killed a lot of people. Some escort girls in an apartment uptown... uh... some homeless people maybe five or ten. Uh... Some NYU girl I met in Central Park, I left her in a parking lot behind some donut shop, I killed Bethany, my old girlfriend, with a nailgun and... some man, some old faggot with a dog. Last week I killed another girl... with a chainsaw... I had to, she almost got away. And there... was someone else there I don't remember, maybe a model, but sh- she's dead, too. And, uh- PAUL ALLEN! I killed Paul Allen with an axe! In the face! His body is dissolving in a bathtub in Hell's Kitchen! I don't want to leave anything out here — I guess I've killed maybe... 20 people... maybe 40! Uh- huh huh-I have uh... tapes of a lot of it. Some of the girls have seen the tapes — I even... I ate some of their brains and I tried to cook a little. Tonight, I uh- just had to kill a lot of people! And I'm not sure I'm gonna get away with it... this time. I mean... I mean I guess I'm a pretty sick guy. So, if you get back tomorrow, I may show up at Harry's Bar. So, you know, keep your eyes OPEN. Okay, bye.

American Psycho - Patrick Bateman's Musical Analysis and Commands
Patrick Bateman: [to two prostitutes; [w:Phil Collins|Phil Collins; [W:Genesis (band)|Genesis; [w:Duke (album)|Duke; [w:Invisible Touch|Invisible Touch; [w:Land of Confusion|Land of Confusion; [w:In Too Deep (song)|In Too Deep; [w:In the Air Tonight|In the Air Tonight; [w:Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)|Against All Odds; [w:Sussudio|Sussudio]
Do you like ]? I've been a big ] fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, ]. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins presence became more apparent. I think ] was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to "]". In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "]" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "]" and, uh, "]". Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is "]", a great, great song, a personal favorite.

American Psycho - Struggle with Identity and Inner Turmoil
Patrick Bateman:
I have all the characteristics of a human being: flesh, blood, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

American Psycho - The Illusion of Self in Patrick Bateman
Patrick Bateman:
I live in the American Gardens Building on West 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me. Only an entity. Something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simply am not there.

The Dark Knight Rises - The Nature of True Punishment
Bruce Wayne:
Why didn't you just kill me?
Bane:
You don't fear death. You welcome it. Your punishment must be more severe.
Bruce:
Torture?
Bane:
Yes, but not of your body. Of your soul.
Bruce:
Where am I?
Bane:
Home! Where I learned the truth about despair, as will you. There's a reason why this prison is the worst hell on earth: hope. Every man who has rotted here over the centuries has looked up to the light and imagined climbing to freedom. So easy. So simple. And like shipwrecked men turning to sea water from uncontrollable thirst, many have died trying. I learned here that there can be no true despair without hope. So, as I terrorize Gotham, I will feed its people hope to poison their souls. I will let them believe they can survive so that you can watch them clambering over each other to stay in the sun. You can watch me torture an entire city, and when you have truly understood the depth of your failure, we will fulfill Ra's al Ghul's destiny. We will destroy Gotham and then, when it is done, and Gotham is ashes, then you have my permission to die!

The Dark Knight Rises - The Struggle Between Duty and Moving On
Alfred Pennyworth:
I'll get this to Mr. Fox, but no more. I've sewn you up, I've set your bones, but I won't bury you. I've buried enough members of the Wayne family.
Bruce Wayne:
You'll leave me?
Alfred:
You see only one end to your journey. Leaving is all I have to make you understand. You're not Batman anymore. You have to find another way. You used to talk about finishing, about a life beyond that awful cave.
Bruce:
Alfred, Rachel died knowing that we had decided to be together. That was my life beyond the cave. I can't just move on. She... She didn't. She couldn't.
Alfred:
What if she had?
Bruce:
She-- I mean, I can't change that.
Alfred:
What if before she died, she wrote a letter saying she chose Harvey Dent over you? And what if, to spare you pain, I burnt that letter?
Bruce:
How dare you use Rachel to try to stop me.
Alfred:
I am using the truth, Master Wayne. Maybe it's time we all stop trying to outsmart the truth and let it have its day! I'm-- I'm sorry.
Bruce:
You're sorry? You expect to destroy my world, and then think that we're going to shake hands?
Alfred:
No. No, no... I know what this means.
Bruce:
What does it mean?
Alfred:
It means your hatred, and it also means losing someone that I have cared for since I first heard his cries echo through this house. But it might also mean saving your life, and that is more important.
Bruce:
Goodbye, Alfred.

The Dark Knight Rises - The Rise of Bane from Darkness
Alfred Pennyworth:
If you're seriously considering going back out there, you should hear the rumors surrounding Bane.
Bruce Wayne:
I'm all ears.
Alfred:
There is a prison in a more ancient part of the world. A pit, where men are thrown, to suffer, and die. But sometimes a man rises from the darkness. Sometimes the darkness sends something back.
Bruce:
Bane?
Alfred:
Bane. Born and raised in hell on Earth.
Bruce:
Born in a prison?
Alfred:
No one knows why, or how he escaped. But they do know that once he did, he was trained under Ra's Al Ghul, your mentor.
Bruce:
Bane was a member of the League of Shadows?
Alfred:
And then he was excommunicated. And any man who is too extreme for Ra's Al Ghul is not to be trifled with.
Bruce:
I didn't realize I was known for trifling with criminals.
Alfred:
That was then. And you can strap up your leg and put your mask back on. But that doesn't make you what you were.
Bruce:
If this man is everything that you say he is, then this city needs me.
Alfred:
The city needs Bruce Wayne. Your resources, your knowledge. It doesn't need your body, or your life. That time has passed.
Bruce:
You're afraid that if I go back out there, I'll fail.
Alfred:
No. I'm afraid that you want to.

The Dark Knight - The Burden of Choice in Darkness
Bruce Wayne:
People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?
Alfred Pennyworth:
Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman. He can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make - the right choice.
Bruce:
Well, today I found out what Batman can't do. He can't endure this. Today you get to say "I told you so".
Alfred: [pause]
Today, I don't want to. But I did bloody tell you. I suppose they'll lock me up as well, as your accomplice.
Bruce:
Accomplice? I'm gonna tell them the whole thing was your idea!

The Dark Knight - Understanding Desperation and Complexity in Conflict
Bruce Wayne:
Targeting me won't get their money back. I knew the mob wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different. They've crossed a line.
Alfred Pennyworth:
You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed them, you hammered them to the point of desperation, and in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand.
Bruce:
Criminals aren't complicated, Alfred. We just need to figure out what he's after.
Alfred:
With respect, Master Wayne, perhaps this is a man you don't fully understand either. A long time ago, I was in Burma. My friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones, but their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So we went looking for the stones, but in six months, we never met anyone who traded with him. One day, I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away.
Bruce:
So why steal them?
Alfred:
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
