Out of hit ideas and seemingly in the twilight of his career, Broadway producer Russ Ward (Clark Gable) decides to give up the game. But when Russ lays off his nubile secretary, Ellie Brown (Carroll Baker), she shocks him with a declaration of love. Inspired, Ward commands playwright MacDonald (Lee J. Cobb) to rewrite his latest show as a May-December romance starring Brown herself. Ward struggles to make a comeback as his ex-wife, Kathryn (Lilli Palmer), plots to end his new relationship.
Newspaper editor Jim Gannon (Clark Gable) doesn't have much respect for college journalism programs, so he's irate when his boss sends him to speak at a night-school class. Despite clashing with instructor Erica Stone (Doris Day), Jim falls for the attractive teacher. He decides to join the class under an assumed identity, and the two begin a flirtatious relationship. When Jim's girlfriend, Peggy DeFore (Mamie Van Doren), catches wind of the situation, however, she's none too pleased.
In Frank Capra's acclaimed romantic comedy, spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) impetuously marries the scheming King Westley, leading her tycoon father (Walter Connolly) to spirit her away on his yacht. After jumping ship, Ellie falls in with cynical newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable), who offers to help her reunite with her new husband in exchange for an exclusive story. But during their travels, the reporter finds himself falling for the feisty young heiress.
