Accomplished sports writer Mitch Albom (Hank Azaria) feels that his life is lacking, despite his success. When Mitch watches a television interview with his former university professor, Morrie Schwartz (Jack Lemmon), he is moved to reconnect with his old mentor, who is struggling with Lou Gehrig's disease. As Mitch and Morrie get reacquainted, they engage in thoughtful conversations about a variety of significant topics, including love, happiness and death.
Set in Dayton, Tenn., famous trial lawyer Henry Drummond (Jack Lemmon) debates evangelical politician and attorney Matthew Harrison Brady (George C. Scott) in this dramatic retelling of the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925. Science teacher E.K. Hornbeck (Beau Bridges) teaches the theory of evolution, which violates the state statute supporting creationism. When the case is brought to trial, Drummond defends Hornbeck's right to teach Darwinism against Brady's religious counter-arguments.
In a remake of the 1950s classic, bias and group-think influence the deliberations of a dozen jury members. Initially, one of the jurors (Jack Lemmon) is the only roadblock between the panel and unanimous conviction of the Latino alleged murderer they've been called to judge. But the all-male jury's negotiations prove fluid, and as the hours pass, more and more of the dissenter's peers come over to his side. Before long, the trial of an oppressed youth becomes a meditation on social justice.
