National Lampoon's Senior Trip - A Conversation Between Lisa and Mark
Lisa Perkins:
So... here we are. Just the two of us. First night in Washington.
Mark D'Agostino:
Yup.
Lisa:
Listen, you were right about all those things you said to me.
Dags:
What things?
Lisa:
You know, about... waking up and realizing I've wasted my life studying.
Dags:
Studying sucks.
Lisa:
I'm not gonna do it anymore.
Dags:
You're not gonna study anymore?
Lisa:
No; I'm not gonna waste my life.
Dags:
Oh, cool.
Lisa:
I need to ask you for a favor.
Dags:
Sure. What?
Lisa:
Well, I've been thinking about this and... I've decided that I don't want to go to college a virgin.

Dahmer - The Cross as a Symbol of Torture
Jeffrey Dahmer:
You know what the cross was, don't you?
Rodney:
Yeah, where Jesus died, right?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
A torture device... used to kill criminals. So when you pray to it, it's like praying to an electric chair, or a guillotine.

Dahmer - Questioning Identity and Preferences Among Friends
Jeffrey Dahmer:
You think you're a rebel don't you?
Lance Bell:
Not really.
Jeffrey Dahmer:
Okay. What's your favorite movie?
Lance Bell: [[Bonnie and Clyde]
].
Jeffrey Dahmer:
Okay. Your favorite band?
Lance Bell:
Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Jeffrey Dahmer:
What do you think of police?
Lance Bell:
Don't like em.
Jeffrey Dahmer:
Well, it's pretty obvious you're a rebel. You're against the establishment.
Lance Bell:
Yeah, maybe I am?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
So, why don't you see that having sex with only girls is following the most fascist social lie of them all?
Lance Bell:
Clyde Barrow broke every law there was, including killing people. He did not fuck guys.
Jeffrey Dahmer:
I read he did. They just wouldn't put that in a movie.
Lance Bell:
It's such bullshit.

Dahmer - Hidden Anger and Dark Intentions
Jeffrey Dahmer:
You must be harboring a lot of anger inside.
Rodney:
I'm not angry inside, all right?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
I think you are. I think you act all sweet and innocent, but it's only to cover up how you wanna kill people.

Dahmer - An Unexpected Gesture of Kindness
Khamtay:
Why would you buy me those?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
Because I like to do nice things for people. Makes me feel good about myself.
Khamtay:
Are you some kind of nut?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
That's sad.
Khamtay:
What?
Jeffrey Dahmer:
That we've gotten to a point where doing nice things for people is considered insane.

S.W.A.T. - Team Loyalty Amidst Chaos
Brian Gamble:
Let's get the hell outta here, huh? I need a cocktail.
Jim Street:
I'm staying.
Gamble: [In disbelief]
You're what? Wha-? After that?
Street:
A couple of months, Fuller will find some new asses to chew out, and we'll be back on the team.
Gamble:
Fuller is the cockroach in this department, brother, and he's not gonna give us any second chance.
Street:
What are you gonna do, piss away all the hard work you did to get here?
Gamble:
Piss WHAT away, Jimmy? The cage? C'mon man, we're better than that and you know it. Gonna come with me? Well, a real partner wouldn't have to ask that, would he?
Street:
A real partner would step up to what he did at the bank.
Gamble:
Yeah, I saved the hostage.
Street:
You disobeyed the hold.
Gamble:
No. I saved that hostage.
Street: [shouts]
You disobeyed the hold! You made the decision yourself, and you shot a hostage, Jesus, Brian!
Gamble: [shocked]
Wow, you sound a lot like Fuller. Is that what you two were talking about in there? You rat me out, you cut a deal to get back on the team, Jimmy?
Street:
Did I cut a deal?
Gamble:
Yeah, did you?
Street:
How many times have I covered up for your goddamn stunts?
Gamble: [shrugs; picks up badge; tosses badge to Street]
That's what a partner's supposed to do... You just picked a paycheck over me, bro.
Street:
You just picked yourself over everything else.
Gamble: [slaps locker in anger]
You wanna stay here, be Fuller's bitch? You go right ahead, but I can't do it, nope, can't do it. Goddmanit goddamnit god-'-damnit, Jimmy.
Street:
Partners for five years, this is how you wanna end it?
Gamble:
Nuh, uh. I didn't end it. You sold me out to the press.
Street: [tosses badge back to Gamble, who comes over and grabs Street by the shirt in anger]
You know, I never realized until now how full of shit you are.
Gamble: [pushes Street back and breaks a mirror behind him]
Fuck you and SWAT.

S.W.A.T. - Consequences of Choices in Law Enforcement
Brian Gamble:
That woman is alive because of what we did.
Capt. Thomas Fuller:
Yeah, alive and suing the city for millions. The Chief said if he's gonna pay, somebody else does, too, and it sure as hell isn't gonna be me.
Brian Gamble:
C'mon Fuller we get...
Capt. Thomas Fuller: [Interrupting]
*Captain* Fuller.
Brian Gamble:
Captain Fuller, we get two seconds to make a decision! You get two months to sit there and tear it apart?!
Velasquez:
SWAT means "Special Weapons *And* Tactics". Where were your tactics out there?
Jim Street:
Saving a woman from getting shot. That's where are tactics were.
Gamble:
Every cop in this department knows that we did the right thing.
Fuller:
Sometimes, doing the right thing isn't doing the right thing.
Sgt. Howard:
What the hell does that mean?
Fuller: [stern; turns to Street and Gamble]
Sergeant... You disobeyed a direct order, end of story. You're both off SWAT.
Velasquez:
Captain. They're two of our best officers.
Fuller:
Well I'm not sticking them back in the field after a stunt like that.
Gamble: [Becoming angry]
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know that saving lives was goddamn stunt!
Fuller: [Becoming angry with Gamble]
Hey, you've got a big mouth, and apparently you're quick on the trigger, and *that* is why your ass is in a sling!
Velasquez:
Captain Fuller, if you're really gonna put them off SWAT at least keep them in the division. Give'em a shot at getting back.
Fuller:
Fine, stick'em in the gun cage. Get'em out of my sight.

Arrival - Reflections on Life and Connection
Dr. Louise Banks:
If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?
Ian Donnelly: [Looks up at the sky]
Maybe I would say what I feel more often than I... I don't know. You know I've had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as I can remember. You know what surprised me the most? It wasn't meeting them. It was meeting you.

Arrival - Understanding Language as a Gift
Dr. Louise Banks:
I know what it is.
Ian Donnelly:
What?
Dr. Louise Banks:
It's not a weapon. It's a gift. The weapon is their language. They gave it all to us.
Ian Donnelly:
So we can learn Heptapod?
Dr. Louise Banks:
If you learn it... really learn it, you get to perceive time the way they do. So you get to see what's to happen. But time, it isn't the same for them. It is not linear.

Arrival - Exploring Language's Impact on the Mind
Ian Donnelly:
How are you feeling?
Dr. Louise Banks:
I need some sleep, but...I am fine.
Ian Donnelly:
Yeah?
Dr. Louise Banks:
I've been doing a bit of reading about this idea that...What if you immerse yourself into a foreign language?...You can actually rewire your brain.
Ian Donnelly:
It is a hypothesis.
Dr. Louise Banks:
It is a theory that...It is the theory that...The language you speak determines how you think. Yes, it affects how you see everything...
Ian Donnelly:
I'm curious. Are you dreaming in their language?
Dr. Louise Banks:
I've had some dreams. I don't think that makes me unfit to do this job.

Arrival - The Complexity of Communication and Relationships
Ian Donnelly:
You know, I was just thinking about you. You approach language like a mathematician. You know that right?
Dr. Louise Banks:
I will take that as a compliment.
Ian Donnelly:
But it is. And... I watched you steer us around these communication traps that I did not even know existed. What...? I guess this is why I'm still single.
Dr. Louise Banks:
Trust me, you can understand communication and still end up single.

Arrival - Naming the Heptapods in Arrival

Arrival - Communication Challenges in Alien Interaction
Col. Weber:
I don't want to take away from your success, but Dr. Banks, is it really the right approach? Try to teach them how to speak and read? That's gonna take long.
Dr. Louise Banks:
You're wrong! It's faster.
Col. Weber:
Everything you do here, I have to explain to a room full of men, whose first and last question is "How can this be used against us?". So you'll have to give me more than that!
Dr. Louise Banks:
Kangaroo.
Col. Weber:
What is that?
Dr. Louise Banks: [[w:James Cook|James Cook; [Australia]
In 1770, Captain ]'s ship ran aground off the coast of ] and led a party, where they found the aboriginal people. One of the sailors pointed to the animals that hop around and put their babies in their pouch, and he asked what they were. The Aborigines said, "Kangaroo".
Col. Weber:
And your point is?
Dr. Louise Banks:
It wasn't until later that they learned that "kangaroo" means "I don't understand". So...I need this so that we don't misinterpret things in there, otherwise it is going to take 10 times as long.
Col. Weber:
I can sell that for now. But I need you to submit your vocabulary of words before the next session. Remember what happened to the Aborigines. A more advanced race, nearly wiped them out.
Ian Donnelly:
It's a good story.
Dr. Louise Banks:
Thanks. It's not true, but it proves my point.

Arrival - Understanding Heptapod Language and Thought Patterns
Ian Donnelly:
There's so much we still don't know about heptapods. ("Hepta", seven, and "Pod", foot). The breakthrough came when we realized what a heptapod says, has nothing to do with what a heptapod writes. Unlike all human written language, their writing is symbolic. It conveys meaning, it does not represent sound. Perhaps they view our form of writing as a wasted opportunity, passing every second communications channel. We have our friends in Pakistan to thank for their study on how the heptapods write. Because unlike speech, a logogram is free of time. Like their ship or their bodies. Their written language has no form or no direction. Linguists call this nonlinear orthography. Which raises the question: "Is this how they think?" Imagine you wanted to write a sentence using two hands, starting from either side. You'd have to know each word you wanted to use, as well as how much space they will occupy. A heptapod can write a complex sentence in two seconds effortlessly. It took us a month to make the simplest vocabulary.
