In 1930, young Buddy (T.J. Lowther) lives with his aunt (Julie Harris) in Alabama. For Christmas, Buddy travels to New Orleans to reunite with his estranged father (Henry Winkler), while holding some unrealistic expectations for the holiday. As it is, his father is a con artist more intent on scamming than building a relationship with his son. Meanwhile, his dad is pursuing the niece (Swoosie Kurtz) of wealthy Cornelia Beaumont (Katharine Hepburn) -- but Christmas is the season of miracles.
An escaped thief (Ryan O'Neal) becomes a holiday guest after a spry woman (Katharine Hepburn) catches him raiding her refrigerator.
Margaret Delafield (Katharine Hepburn) is a wealthy widow who endures a health scare and develops a close bond with her doctor, Marvin Elias (Harold Gould). When they begin a romance, families on both sides balk at the possibility of marriage between the older couple. Margaret's sons, Horton (David Ogden Stiers) and Chipper (Charles Frank), are especially disapproving, partly because Marvin is Jewish. Margaret remains undaunted, however, and presses forward with their plans to marry.
