Reflections on Childhood and Baseball's Importance
Ray Kinsella
By the time I was ten, playing baseball got to be like eating vegetables or taking out the garbage. So when I was fourteen I started refusing. Can you believe that? An American boy refusing to have a catch with his father.
Terence Mann
Why fourteen?
Ray Kinsella
That's when I read "The Boat Rocker", by Terence Mann.
Terence Mann
Oh, God.
Ray Kinsella
Never played catch with him again.
Terence Mann
You see? That's the kind of crap people are always trying to lay on me. It's not my fault you wouldn't play catch with your father!

Reflecting on Dreams and Missed Moments
Dr. Graham
It was like coming this close to your dreams and then watch them brush past you like a stranger in a crowd. At the time, you don't think much of it. You know, we just don't recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then I thought, Well, there'll be other days. I didn't realize that that was the only day. And now, Ray Kinsella, I want to ask you a question. What's so interesting about a half an inning that would make you come all the way from Iowa to talk to me about it 50 years after it happened?
Ray Kinsella
I really didn't know till just now, but I think it's to ask you if you could do anything you wanted, if you could have a-a wish.
Dr. Graham
And that you're the kind of a man who could grant me that wish?
Ray Kinsella
I don't know. I'm just asking.
Dr. Graham
Well, you know, I-I never got to bat in the major leagues. I'd have liked to have had that chance just once, to stare down a big-league pitcher. To stare him down, then just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn't. That's what I wish for. The chance to squint at a sky so blue that it hurts your eyes just to look at it. To feel the tingle in your arm as you connect with the ball. To run the bases, stretch a double into a triple, and flop face-first into third, wrap your arms around the bag. That's my wish, Ray Kinsella. That's my wish. And is there enough magic out there in the moonlight to make this dream come true?
Ray Kinsella
What would you say if I said yes?
Dr. Graham
I think I'd actually believe you.
Ray Kinsella
Well, sir, there's a place where things like that happen, and if you want to go, I can take you.
Dr. Graham
This is my most special place in all the world, Ray. Once a place touches you like this, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child. I can't leave Chisholm.
Ray Kinsella
Fifty years ago, for five minutes you came within... y-you came this close. It would kill some men to get so close to their dream and not touch it. God, they'd consider it a tragedy.
Dr. Graham
Son, if I'd only gotten to be a doctor for five minutes... now that would have been a tragedy.

Understanding the Limitations of Redstone Rocket
Paul Stafford
How did you know the Redstone couldn't support orbital flight? That's classified information; it's top secret.
Katherine Johnson
Well, it's no secret why the Redstone tests keep failing. It's fine for sub-orbital flight, but it can't handle the weight of the capsule and push it into space. Numbers don't lie.
Al Harrison
And you figured all that out with this? Half of that is redacted.
[reading the censored test results documents]
Katherine Johnson
Well, what's there tells a story if you read between the lines. The distance from launch to orbit, we know. Redstone mass, we know. Mercury capsule weight, we know. And the speeds are there, and the data.
Al Harrison
You did the math.
Katherine Johnson
Yes, sir. I look beyond.
Al Harrison
And how did you know about the Atlas rocket? That's not math. That data's not here. Like he said, it's classified.
Katherine Johnson
...I held it up to the light.
Al Harrison
You held it up to the light?
Katherine Johnson
Yes, sir.
Al Harrison
...Well, there it is. "Atlas". What's your name?
Katherine Johnson
Katherine Gobal.
Al Harrison
Are you a spy, Katherine?
Katherine Johnson
Am I what?
Al Harrison
I said, are you a Russian spy?
Katherine Johnson
No, sir. I'm not Russian.
Ruth
She's not Russian, sir.
Al Harrison
Alright, then, we have nothing to lose, here. Give her everything she needs to work on Shepherd's trajectories, without redaction. Are we clear on that?
[to Stafford]
Paul Stafford
Are we sure about this?
Al Harrison
What's the issue, Paul? You heard her, she's not a spy.
Paul Stafford
I–I just don't think it's a good idea.
Al Harrison
You know what I think is a good idea? Darker ink. I think darker ink is a good idea. Ruth, could you pass that along?
Ruth
Yes, sir.
Al Harrison
Thank you, Katherine.
Katherine Johnson
Thank you, sir.
[leaves with Ruth]
Al Harrison
This interrogation's over.

Embracing Destiny and Responsibility
Jonathan Kent
You're not just anyone, Clark, and I have to believe that you're–that you're sent here for a reason. All these changes you're going through, one day–one day, you're goin'a think of them as a blessing, and when that day comes, you're goin'a have to make a choice: a choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not.

Rethinking the Approach to Orbital Calculations
Katherine Johnson
The problem is when the capsule moves from an elliptical orbit to a parabolic orbit; There's no mathematical formula for that. Cause we can calculate launch and landing, but without this conversion, the capsule stays in orbit. We can't bring it back home.
Al Harrison
...Maybe we've been thinking about this all wrong.
Paul Stafford
And how's that?
Al Harrison
Maybe it's not new math at all.
Katherine Johnson
It could be old math: something that looks at the problem numerically and not theoretically. Math is always dependable.
Al Harrison
For you, it is.
Katherine Johnson
Euler's Method.
[takes a long look at the formulas, then gets an idea]
Paul Stafford
Euler's Method?
Katherine Johnson
Yes.
Paul Stafford
But that's ancient.
Katherine Johnson
But it works. It works numerically.

The Complexity of Justice and Truth
Jim Garrison
Going back to when we were children, I think most of us in this courtroom thought justice came automatically. That virtue was its own reward. That good triumphs over evil. But as we get older, we know this isn't true. Individual human beings have to create justice, and this is not easy because the truth often poses a threat to power and one often has to fight power at great risk to themselves.

The Politics of Power and Assassination
Jim Garrison
I never realized Kennedy was so dangerous to the Establishment. Is that why?
X
Well, that's the real question, isn't it? Why? The How and the Who is just scenery for the public. ], ], Cuba, the Mafia, keeps em guessing like some kind of parlor game. Prevents em from asking the most important question: Why? Why was Kennedy killed? Who benefited? Who has the power to cover it up? Who?...The organizing principle of any society, Mr. Garrison, is for war. The authority of the state over its people resides in its war powers. And Kennedy wanted to end the ] in his second term. He wanted to call off the moon race in favor of cooperation with the Soviets. He signed a treaty with the Soviets to ban nuclear testing. He refused to invade Cuba in 1962 and he set out to withdraw from Vietnam. But all of that ended on the 22nd of November, 1963. As early as 1961, they knew Kennedy was not going to war in Southeast Asia. Like ], he is surrounded by enemies and something's underway, but it has no face. Yet everybody in the loop knows...Everything is cellularized. No one has said, He must die. There's been no vote. Nothing's on paper. There's no one to blame. It's as old as the crucifixion. A military firing squad: five bullets, one blank. No one's guilty, because everyone in the power structure who knows anything has a plausible deniability. There are no compromising connections except at the most secret point. But what's paramount is that it must succeed. No matter how many die, no matter how much it costs, the perpetrators must be on the winning side and never subject to prosecution for anything by anyone. That is a coup d'état....

I don't, I can't - I can't believe they killed him because he wanted to change things. In our time. In our country.
X
Well, they've been doing it all through history. Kings are killed, Mr. Garrison. Politics is power, nothing more! Oh, don't take my word for it, don't believe me. Do your own work, your own thinkin'....
Jim Garrison
The size of this is beyond me. Testify...Testify.
X
No chance in hell. No, I'd be arrested and gagged, maybe sent to an institution, maybe worse, you too. I can give you the background, but you have to find the foreground, the little things. Keep digging. Remember, you're the only person to bring a trial in the murder of John Kennedy. That's important, it's historic.
Jim Garrison
I haven't yet. I don't have much of a case.
X
You don't have a choice anymore. You've become a significant threat to the national security structure. They would have killed you already but you got a lot of light on you. Instead, they're trying to destroy your credibility. They already have in many circles in this town. Be honest. Your only chance is to come up with a case. Something. Anything. Make arrests. Stir the shit storm. Hope to reach a point of critical mass that'll start a chain reaction of people coming forward. Then the government'll crack. Remember, fundamentally, people are suckers for the truth, and the truth is on your side, Bubba. I just hope you get a break.

The Duty of the People in Justice
Jim Garrison
] wrote, Authority forgets a dying king'. This was never more true than for John F. Kennedy, whose murder was probably one the most terrible moments in the history of our country. We, the people, the jury system sitting in judgment on Clay Shaw, represent the hope of humanity against government power. In discharging your duty, in bringing the first conviction in this house of cards against Clay Shaw, ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Do not forget your dying king. Show this world that this is still a government of the people, for the people, and by the people'. Nothing as long as you live will ever be more important. It's up to you.

Wyatt Earp
Doc was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a frontier vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long lean ash-blond fellow nearly dead with consumption, and at the same time the most skillful gambler and the nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a gun that I ever knew.

The American public has yet to see the real X-rays and photographs of the autopsy. Why? There are hundreds of documents that could help prove this conspiracy. Why are they being withheld or burned by the government? Each time my office or you the people have asked those questions, demanded crucial evidence, the answer from on high has always been national security. What kind of national security do we have when we've been robbed of our leaders? What national security permits the removal of fundamental power from the hands of the American people and validates the ascendancy of an invisible government in the United States? That kind of national security, gentlemen of the jury, is when it smells like it, feels like it, and looks like it, you call it what it is: Fascism!

A Dark Proposal Between Killers

Ray Kinsella's Journey Through Family and Baseball
Ray Kinsella
My father's name was John Kinsella. It's an Irish name. He was born in North Dakota in 1896 and never saw a big city until he came back from France in 1918. He settled in Chicago where he quickly learned to live and die with the White Sox. Died a little when they lost the 1919 World Series, died a lot the following summer when 8 members of the team were accused of throwing that series. He played in the minors for a year or two but nothing ever came of it. Moved to Brooklyn in 35, married mom in 38 and was already an old man working at the naval yards when I was born in 1952. My name's Ray Kinsella. Mom died when I was three and I suppose dad did the best he could. Instead of Mother Goose, I was put to bed at night with stories of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and the great "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Dad was a Yankees fan then so, of course, I rooted for Brooklyn. But in 58 the Dodgers moved away and we had to find other things to fight about. We did. And when it came time to go to college, I picked the farthest one away from home I could find. This of course drove him right up the wall which, I suppose, was the point. Officially my major was English but, really, it was the 60s. I marched, I smoked some grass, I tried to like sitar music, and I met Annie. The only thing we had in common was that she came from Iowa and I had once heard of Iowa. After graduation we moved to the mid-west and stayed with her family as long as we could; almost a full afternoon. Annie and I got married in June of 74. Dad died that fall. A few years later, Karen was born. She smelled weird but, we loved her anyway. Then Annie got the crazy idea that she could talk me into buying a farm. I'm 36 years old, I love my family, I love baseball and I'm about to become a farmer. But until I heard the voice, I'd never done a crazy thing in my whole life.

The Legacy of Political Assassination
Jim Garrison
We've all become ]s in our country, children of a slain father-leader whose killers still possess the throne. The ghost of John F. Kennedy confronts us with the secret murder at the heart of the American Dream. He forces on us the appalling questions: Of what is our Constitution made? What are our lives worth? What is the future of a democracy where a President can be assassinated under suspicious circumstances while the machinery of legal action scarcely trembles? How many more political murders disguised as heart attacks, suicides, cancers, drug overdoses? How many plane and car crashes will occur before they are exposed for what they are?
