In the small town of Carvel, Judge James Hardy (Lewis Stone) learns from a chemist and promoter that a plot of land always considered worthless is actually rich in bauxite, a mineral used to make aluminum. After verifying the claim, the judge urges his friends and neighbors to invest in the land with him. Meanwhile, the judge's teenage son, Andy (Mickey Rooney), falls for a new teacher after getting dumped by his girlfriend. Both the judge and Andy learn that things aren't what they seem.
