Jane's Confusion in a Chaotic Moment

Jane Porter: Are you sure what all the fuss was about? Daddy! Daddy Quick! No, wait, wait. Hold still.

Safari Adventures and Unexpected Threats

Cecil Clayton: I was reminded of a safari I led up the Zambezi. Marvelous. Lots of hunting, yes. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Ooh, was it scary there. Two bearers with only three rifles for me, blasted off. That's if I knew I was born for Africa! And Africa was created for--
Professor Porter: Clayton? Clayton! Oh, there you are. What is this? What is this, Clayton? Are we in danger?
Cecil Clayton: I thought I saw something.
Professor Porter: Is it a Hippopotamus Amphibious, or a Rhinoceros Bihornus?
Cecil Clayton: Professor, don't move!
Professor Porter: [nods swiftly] Ah, right.
Jane Porter: Daddy?
Jane Porter: [Tries to get out, but gets thrown back a bit. Growling, she breaks the branches that throws her in pieces and steps out] Daddy, what's all the hullabaloo about? What is this, Daddy?
Professor Porter: Mr. Clayton asked me not to move. He saw something.
Professor Porter: Oh! I moved!
Jane Porter: Ah, Mr. Clayton, I'm sorry. Excuse me, uh-but my father and I came on this expedition to study gorillas. I believe your shooting might be frightening them away.
Cecil Clayton: You hired me to protect you, Miss Porter, and protect you I shall.
Jane Porter: And you're doing a marvelous job of it. We only have a short time before the ship returns--
Professor Porter: Jane! Jane, do you realize what you're standing in?! A gorilla's nest!
Jane Porter: [looks at it] Oh, Daddy.
Cecil Clayton: At last. Our first sign in days. Do you think the beasts could be nearby?
Professor Porter: Could be. There's the evidence. Not very far, anyhow.
Jane Porter: Daddy, look. Over there, and there...
Professor Porter: Where? Oh, yes, more nests! I see them!
Jane Porter: Just as you predicted.
Professor Porter and Jane Porter: Entire family groups!
Professor Porter: Jane, I love you!
Cecil Clayton: Family groups? Excuse me, but these are wild beasts that would sooner tear your head off than look at you.
Jane Porter: [Clayton swiftly fires into the same tree Tarzan is at. Luckily, the ape man dodges in time] On the contrary, Daddy's theory is that these are social creatures... Mr. Clayton, please! What if it's a gorilla?
Cecil Clayton: It's no gorilla. Huh. But maybe we should press on.
Professor Porter: Yes, indeed. We should keep heading west following the Ganoderma Ablonatum.
Cecil Clayton: Excellent, Professor! I could've used your expertise on my last safari.

A Mother's Knowledge and a Son's Curiosity

Kala: Don't even think about it.
Tarzan: How'd you know it was me?
Kala: I'm your mother. I know everything. Now, where have you been?
Tarzan: I thought you knew everything.
Terk: Hey, Auntie K! You look remarkably groomed today!
Kala: [unimpressed] Hello, Terk.
Terk: Not the neck. Not the neck there, "T!
Tarzan: I win!
Tantor: Whoa! All right. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Please stop! Somebody's gonna get hurt...and it's always me.
Terk: Cramp in the calf! All right, you win! Ow, ow! Alright! You win. Hello? Yo, yo, let go!
Tarzan: [lets her go] Oh, I'm sorry, Terk.
Terk: What kind of animal are you?
Tantor: Y'know, I've been thinkin lately that Tarzan might be some subspecies of elephant.
Terk: What are you, crazy? An elephant?!
Tantor: Listen to me. Think about it. He enjoys a peanut, I enjoy a peanut.
Terk: He looks nothing like you!
Terk: [To Tarzan] All right, everybody, move aside. Out of my road! Best friend coming through. That would be me. And you, don't make a habit of that, alright? There are other fashions of getting attention. You know?
Tarzan: [laughs happily] I'll try to remember that.
Terk: All right, and I was right behind you needed me.
Tarzan: [upon hearing a gunshot in the distance] What was that?
Tantor: [nervously] Uh, that wasn't me. I swear. All right, perhaps it was.
Kerchak: [Turns to leave] Everyone! Let's move.

Discovering Identity and Belonging

Kala: Tarzan, what are you doing here?
Young Tarzan: [sighs] Why am I so different?
Kala: Because you're covered with mud. That's why.
Young Tarzan: No! Kerchak said I didn't belong in the...
Kala: Close your mouth.
Young Tarzan: ...Kerchak said I don't belong in the family.
Kala: Never mind what Kerchak said. Now hold still.
Young Tarzan: But look at me!
Kala: [Chuckles; Pokes Tarzan's nose, making him chuckle; Tarzan chuckles once more as Kala plays with his ears] I am, Tarzan. And do you know what I see? I see two eyes, like mine, and a nose...someplace. Ahh...here! Two ears... And let's see. What else?
Young Tarzan: [holds up his hands] Two hands?
Kala: [Grins and places his hands against Tarzan's own hands. The boy frowns. The two's hands are different. He sighs as he looks at his hands mournfully. His mother knows at once that the hands fact is a bad idea where she decides to try something else; Tarzan does so; Takes his hand and puts it on his chest] That's right. Close your eyes. Now forget what you see, what do you feel?
Young Tarzan: My heart.
Kala: Come here.
Young Tarzan: Your heart.
Kala: You see? We're exactly the same. Oh! Kerchak just can't see that.
Young Tarzan: I'll make him see it. I'll be the best ape ever!
Kala: Oh...I bet you will.
Phil Collins: [sings] Oh, the power to be strong and the wisdom to be wise. All these facts will come to you in time.
Phil Collins: [singing] On this journey that you're making, there'll be responses that you seek. And it's you who'll climb the mountain, it's you who'll reach the peak.
Phil Collins: [singing] Son of man, look to the heavens! Lift your spirit, set it free! Someday you'll walk tall with pride! Son of man, a man in time you'll be!
Phil Collins: [singing] Though there's no one there to guide you, no one to take your hand. But with faith and understanding, you will journey from boy to man!
Phil Collins: [singing] Son of man, look to the heavens! Lift your spirit, set it free! Someday you'll walk tall with pride! Son of man, a man in time you'll be!
Phil Collins: [singing] In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn. You'll find your places behind the ones you love.
Phil Collins: [singing] Oh, and all the facts you've dreamed of, the visions that you saw. Well, the time is drawing near now, it's yours to claim it all!
Phil Collins: [singing] Son of man, look to the heavens! Lift your spirit, set it free! Someday you'll walk tall with pride! Son of man, a man in time you'll be!
Phil Collins: [singing] Son of man! Son of man's a man for all to see!

Young Tarzan's Playful Imitation of Animals

Kala: Tarzan? Tarzan?
Young Tarzan: [Elephant trumpets] I sure scared you, Mom.
Kala: You sure did! Can't you imitate any quieter animals?
Young Tarzan: Oh, Mom, that's no fun. Wanna see me be a leopard?
Kala: Why don't you just come up with your own sound?
Gorillas: Kala!
Young Tarzan: [looks at Kerchak] Oops.
Young Terk: [sobbing] Tarzan! Thank goodness you're all right! Kala and I have been so worried. Thank you, thank you for finding him, Kerchak, you are such a wise and caring leader. Run!
Young Tarzan: Um...
Young Terk: Hello! Are you thick in the head?
Young Tarzan: What?
Young Terk: How many times do I have to tell you? If you want Kerchak to like you, stay away from him.
Flynt: Hey, come on, Terk, step on it!
Mungo: Last one there's a dung beetle.
Young Terk: [laughs] Yeah, and the first one's gotta eat it.
Young Tarzan: Terk, can I come?
Young Terk: [Chuckles] Well, yeah you could if you could keep up, but you know, you can't really keep up. Wait up guys, wait up, right behind you.
Apes: You're standing on my spleen.
Flynt: [punching Mungo] Take that! Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!
Young Terk: [singing; speaking] The fun has arrived. Thank you very much.
Flynt: Hey, what took you so long?
Young Terk: I had a little pest-control problem but it's all taken care of. Whoa!
Young Tarzan: Hi, guys.
Flynt: Terk, what is this, some kind of joke?
Mungo: Tell me I'm not looking at the hairless wonder.
Young Tarzan: Well, Terk said I could come along if I could keep up.
Flynt: Oh, no, Terk!
Young Terk: I'll handle this guys, okay? Listen, buddy, come here. We got a tiny little itsy-bitsy problem here, okay? Personally, I'd love to hang out with you. You know I would. But the guys, they need a little convincing, you know?
Young Tarzan: Okay, what do I gotta do?
Young Terk: Do? What do you gotta do? Oh, it's so stupid.
Young Tarzan: What?
Young Terk: Well, you gotta, you gotta go get a hair.
Young Tarzan: A hair?
Young Terk: [Off-screen; Elephant trumpets] Yeah, a hair, uh-huh. An elephant hair.
Young Tarzan: [gasps] An elephant hair?
Young Terk: [Tarzan rushes his cliff; Young Tarzan falls down his cliff and splashes his water] Like I said, it's stupid, right? Listen, take it from me, go home, okay? Who needs this aggravation? You know, I'm probably gonna leave soon myself. You go, I'll catch up, alright? You see, leave it to me. I told you-- Tarzan! Tarzan, no!
Mungo: Ooh! That one hurt him!
Young Terk: Look, oh, oh, there he is! He's alive!
Young Tarzan: Hey, guys!
Gorillas: Hi.
Young Terk: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, come back, come back!
Flynt: This guy's great! Hey, if he lives you should bring him around more often.
Mungo: Come on, come on, let's go get a better seat.
Young Terk: Oh.
Elephants: You can never get enough sleep, let me tell you.
Young Tantor: Mom, are you sure this water's sanitary? It looks questionable to me.
Tantor's Mother: It's fine, honey.
Young Tantor: Yecch! But what about bacteria?
Tantor's Mother: Tantor, can't you see Mommy's talking?
Young Tantor: Watch out! There's something swimming! It's coming right at you!
Tantor's Mother: Honey, Mommy's losing her patience.
Young Tantor: But this time I really see something!
Tantor's Mother: Oh, boy.
Young Tantor: Piranha! It's a piranha!
Tantor's Mother: Sweetheart, there are no piranhas in Africa.
Elephant #1: Don't tell the kid that, of course there are piranhas in Africa.
Elephant #2: No, she's right. They're native to South America.
Elephant #1: Get outta here.
Elephant #2: It's true.
Elephant #1: No way.
Elephant #2: Come on, now. Think I'd be here if there were?
Young Tantor: Aah! It's right behind you! Run!
Tantor's Mother: For the last time, honey, there are no piranhas in--
Elephant #1: MY BUTT!!
Young Tantor: I told you!
Elephant #1: There's something on my butt.
Elephant #2: What is it?
Elephant #1: Are there anymore of them?
Elephant #2: What is it?
Young Tantor: It's a piranha!
Elephants: Piranha!
Tantor's Mother: Tantor, where are you?
Flynt: He's dead.
Mungo and Flynt: We're dead! Aah!
Flynt: We didn't do it! They're the ones!
Gorilla: Oh, thank you, Kerchak!
Young Terk: [drags his body to safety] Tarzan, buddy! Buddy, come on! Tarzan, don't die on me! Don't die on me! You weren't supposed to do it!
Young Tantor: [pushes Young Terk back] Get away from there! Don't you know a piranha can strip your flesh in a second?!
Young Terk: [Young Tarzan starts coughing water from drowning] What?! He's not a piranha! He's... He's alive! He's alive! He's alive!
Young Tantor: He's alive!
Young Terk: [drops him] He's ali... You idiot! You nearly gave me a heart attack! You happy?
Young Tarzan: [reveals a stolen elephant-tail hair] Uh-huh.
Young Terk: [in delight] You... I don't believe it. You got the hair?
Young Tantor: Is that what this is all about? I got a whole tail of em.
Young Terk: Oh, no.
Young Tarzan: [with Young Terk] Who's that? My mom.
Kala: Tarzan.
Young Tarzan: Hi.
Young Terk: Hi, Aunt Kala.
Kala: Oh, you scared me! What happened?
Young Tarzan: Well. I-
Young Terk: Um, it's sort of a long... It's involved. Because what happened, it was a weird...
Kerchak: [furiously enters] What happened?!
Young Tarzan: It was my fault, Kerchak.
Kala: Tarzan?
Young Tarzan: We were playing and... well... Mmm… I'm sorry, Kerchak.
Kerchak: You almost KILLED someone!
Young Tarzan: But it was an accident Dad.
Kala: He's only a child.
Kerchak: That's not an excuse, Kala! You can't keep defending him!
Kerchak: [to Tarzan] He will never learn! You can't learn to be one of us.
Kala: [Tarzan runs away in shame] Kerchak! Tarzan!

Growing Bonds in Two Worlds

Phil Collins: [singing] Every moment now, the bond grows stronger. Two worlds, one family. Trust your heart, let fate decide. To guide these lives we see!
Baby Terk: Mama, look! Look over there!
Ape Voice: Kala! she's back!
Terk's Mother: Are you all right, dear?
Kala: I'm fine. No, really, honestly. It's just that I got a little bit... sidetracked.
Baby Terk: Well, isn't that, uh-- Well, so-- Well, it's just so, so-- That's freaky-lookin', okay? That's what it is.
Terk's Mother: Terkina!
Baby Terk: Well, it is! I mean, what the heck is it anyway?
Kala: He's a baby.
Baby Terk: Whoa! Ow! I can't--So where's his mama?
Kala: Well, I'm going to be his mother now.
Baby Terk: You know he's not so bad once you get used to him. Kala's gonna be it's mother now.
Kala: Kerchak, I saved him from Sabor.
Kerchak: Kala, it won't replace the one we lost.
Kala: I know that. But... he needs me.
Kerchak: [sighs] But, it-it-it-- Kala, look at it! It´s not our kind! No. You have to take it back.
Kala: Take him back? But he'll die!
Kerchak: If the jungle wants him --
Kala: I want him!
Kerchak: Kala, I cannot let you put our family in danger.
Kala: Does he look dangerous to you?
Kerchak: Hmm. Was it alone?
Kala: Yes. Sabor killed his family.
Kerchak: Are you sure?
Kala: Yes. There are no others.
Kerchak: [sighs] Then you may keep him.
Kala: Kerchak, I know he'll be a good son.
Kerchak: I said he could stay. That doesn't make him my son.
Kala: We will rest here for the night.
Baby Terk: So, um, whatcha gonna call it?
Kala: I'm gonna call him... Tarzan.
Baby Terk: Tarzan? Okay. He's your baby.
Terk's Mother: All right, little lady, come on. It's way past your nest time.
Baby Terk: Oh, Mom, five more minutes?
Terk's Mother: No.
Baby Terk: Two more minutes?
Terk's Mother: No.
Baby Terk: One more "minutes"?
Kala: [singing] Oh, oh, no, shh, shh, don't cry, come on, come on, I'm here. Come stop your crying; it'll be all right. Come take my hand, hold it tight. I will protect you from all around you; I will be here; don't you cry.
Phil Collins: [singing] For one so small, you seem so strong / My arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm / This bond between us can't be broken / I will be here, don't you cry...| Cause you'll be in my heart / Yes, you'll be in my heart / From this day on, now and forevermore...| You'll be in my heart / No matter what they say / You'll be here in my heart, always.
Kala: [song fades] Always...
