Though certainly not without its laughs, ‘Captain Marvel’ came across as a more serious story than, say, last year’s ‘Ms. Marvel’, which introduced the bubbly, enthusiastic (and superhero worshipping) Kamala Khan. At the end of the ‘Ms. Marvel’ series, though, we saw Iman Vellani’s Khan unexpectedly swap places with Brie Larson’s Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers.

The job, then, of ‘The Marvels’ is to follow up not just ‘Captain Marvel’ but also ‘Ms. Marvel’, while also furthering the story of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who we met as a child in ‘Captain Marvel’ and as an adult –– who acquired her own set of powers –– in ‘WandaVision’.

And around all of that, throw in the usual big threat our heroes will have to face, with an assist from Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

What’s the basic story of ‘The Marvels’?

Directed by ‘Candyman’s Nia DaCosta, working from a script she wrote alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells, the new film has a lot going on.

Carol Danvers has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe…

Those stakes mean that for all the jokey fun promised by this one, there will still be other layers to the film.

Here’s what Larson told the Good Morning America team when debuting the trailer,

“The first one was the origin story of who she is. Now it’s digging into some of the complexities. That there is much more to her than that, that there are parts that are not so great about her. That we can see a hero as being a person that doesn’t make every right decision all the time,”

And then there is the typical MCU connective tissue –– the movie will be out after Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’, which will see Fury and Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) fighting a Skrull splinter group. However that shakes out, the events will no doubt impact ‘The Marvels’.

And what of all new cosmic developments? We’ll see plenty of intergalactic action, likely setting up more action in space for the likes of the 'Fantastic Four.' As for S.A.B.E.R.? Still no idea on that acronym, though the station was introduced in the Fury-featuring end credits sting of ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the movie pulls off the trick of blending the energies and tones of ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’ alongside Monica Rambeau’s own style. From the looks of this, it’ll certainly have fun trying and we might just enjoy it too.

‘The Marvels’ will be in theaters on November 10th.
