Gird your heartstrings: The trailer for the upcoming film "Bel Canto" is an emotionally intense one.

The upcoming drama is based on Ann Pratchett's 2001 novel of the same name, meaning it is loosely based on the Japanese hostage crisis that took place in Lima, Peru, between late 1996 and early 1997. Starring Julianne Moore, Ken Watanabe, and Sebastian Koch, it centers on the hostages and their captors during a lengthy standoff. As we see in the trailer, the situation is complicated, and so too are the bonds that form between the people involved.

Given that Moore's character is an opera singer, there's beautiful music throughout the preview. The vocals come courtesy of acclaimed opera singer Renee Fleming. Incidentally, she was another of the novel's inspirations, as Pratchett said in a 2002 NPR interview.

A film adaptation of "Bel Canto" is long overdue; Pratchett previously shared that there had been multiple failed attempts in the past. Let's hope this one is pitch perfect.

"Bel Canto" opens in theaters Sept. 14, and then on demand on Sept. 21.
