The timing couldn't have been worse.

With his new film "Jem and the Holograms" opening to what may be a historically awful box office, director Jon Chu found himself addressing a movie crowd as the keynote speaker Saturday at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles.

"Soooo, this is a bit awkward," began Chu, according to Deadline. "It looks like our $5 million movie is going to make about $1.2 million this weekend. ... So this morning isn't the best kind of day."

"Jem" actually was headed slightly higher to $1.3 million, but that would still make it one of the worst performing studio releases on more than 2,000 screens.

Still, Chu insisted, he wouldn't give up his day job.

“I do have to tell you from the bottom of my heart and wounded soul, that I am so lucky, and we all are," he said. " Because we have the best jobs in the world. We get to tell stories.”
