Big things really do come in small packages.

And the refrain echoes true for Paul Rudd, the affable rom-com staple who turns superhero in the forthcoming "Ant-Man."

The star of "Clueless" and "This Is 40" revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that leading a big Marvel franchise action flick was never on his radar.

"The Marvel world wasn’t anything I thought about seriously because I guess I never imagined I’d get hired," he said.

When it comes to plotting his career trajectory, the 46-year-old added that diversifying his roles has never been strategic.

"I rarely have those kind of discussions with my representatives about anything," he explained. "I don’t have an agenda where I do a comedy and say, 'I have to do a drama next,' or 'I am looking for an action movie now.'"

In "Ant-Man," which hits theaters Friday, he portrays one of the Marvel universe's most overlooked heroes.

Rudd takes on Scott Lang, a former petty thief and father who helps his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, safeguard the Ant-Man technology – which allows its user to shrink in size and gain incredible strength.

The battle to save Earth from evildoer Yellowjacket, played by Corey Stoll, who also possesses similar technology, culminates on a toy train track.

As typical practice with many action hero flicks, Rudd will have at least three movies with the character in addition to appearing in cursory storylines of other Marvel universe characters.

"What’s different about it is that it’s a character who’s joining a universe that exists throughout several movies, and that’s like nothing I’ve ever done," Rudd said.

Following "Ant-Man's" release, he will reprise the character in "Captain America: Civil War," in theaters May 2016.
