    Amy Biancolli San Francisco Chronicle

The film is confusing and awkwardly timed, and it drags. show more

How Do You Know must have started with a good idea that got lost in the translation from concept to screen. show more

    Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal

No need to belabor the awfulness of this film, a romantic comedy devoid of romance - instead of chemistry there's the flow of reverse magnetism - and lacking in comic timing, let alone comic content. show more

    Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer

It is a keenly observed movie about loss of identity and finding love, in which Brooks serves up funny-ouch humor with slapstick heartbreak. show more

Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News

Brooks' shallow screenplay feels half-finished, and he never compensates with additional guidance or directorial flair. So all his actors are forced to flail about ineffectually. Apparently, none of them read the script in advance. Because surely then they'd have known to take a pass. show more

    Todd McCarthy The Hollywood Reporter

A low-impact romantic comedy-drama from James L. Brooks in which the central characters are strangely disconnected from one another as well as from the audience. show more

    Scott Tobias NPR

Shapeless and overlong, How Do You Know unfolds in a heap of unprocessed ideas and emotions, as if Brooks started production two or three drafts too early. show more

There are a couple of scenes of pure, sentimental genius, as well as appealingly boggled turns by Rudd and Wilson. show more

    Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune

It's relaxed without being sloppy, or patronizing, and in particular Witherspoon and Lemmon - sorry, make that Rudd - bring charm to burn. show more

    Calvin Wilson St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A bit slow to get started, and it's nowhere near as funny as "The Hangover." But it'll make you smile. show more

More stale stuff from Brooks, Rudd, and Wilson. Waste of time.

Cute movie, and pretty funny! before I watched the movie I thought the title of the movie, \"How do you know\" was a horrible name but then half way through I totally got it and it actually is a cute title for this movie.

I thought this movie was all ********************* worse than Leap Year since most of the stuff didn't make sense/follow through. It was poorly executed. She kept making weird faces .. -.-

This is a decent movie but don't expect any belly laughs - just quirky characters.

I always go into watching these chik-flik rom/coms with my wife with low expectations. This one started out very confusing as to just what the heck was going on and the background story never really gelled for me. Nicholson is Nicholson and plays his pattened part well. Wilson stole the show as an out of touch with life in the real world pro athelete. His clueless struggling to have a normal relationship with a woman is hilarious. There were some witty lines sprinkled throughout, but overall...just so, so. Rent it, don't buy it.
