This is a beautiful film, full of gray-and white-haired men who grow in stature before our eyes. show more

More than anything, Of Gods and Men is a drama of character, and warm humanity. show more

There are eight individual decisions to be made here, yet Beauvois never humanizes any of his monks. The film instead consumes itself with songs, communal prayers and nightly meals. show more

The normally sly Wilson - who was once in the running to play James Bond - was directed by Beauvois to surrender ego. Wilson accomplishes this with a minimum of fuss. show more

Although the monks don't seek death, Of Gods And Men can be seen as an ode to religiously motivated self-sacrifice. But Beauvois deliberately leaves the story open-ended. The value of these men's lives, he's noting, is not defined by how they ended. show more

I can't recall the last film that so wholly, honestly and movingly explained what it means to be a Christian. show more

Like the best spiritual movies, of whatever faith, "Of Gods and Men" moves us toward a union with the infinite, and when we come to the monks' last supper, the moment is staggeringly powerful. show more

I found myself resisting the film's pull of easy emotion. There are fundamental questions here, and the film doesn't engage them. I believe Christian should have had the humility to lead his monks away from the path of self-sacrifice. show more

One of the Best Movies I have seen in the last few years. I consider this Movie a \"Must See\" for everyone. A small, poor, peaceful village where a Monestary and the muslim population have coexisted for centuries. Where the Monks are part of the villages\'s life, and meaning. Where they have friends amoung the Imans, and people: Being invited to parties, and dinners; the monks taking care of the village\'s sick and infirm. Only to be broken by a Radical Muslim Group, and the Unforgiving and Ruthless Army that is fighting the Radical Muslims. The Monks, and village are caught between these two powers, and their war. The Strength the Monks show, helps the people of the town, who fear the Radical Muslim Group, and the Army. As I said,\"This is a Must See for everyone.\"

It was a very moving drama contrasting war and peace. The story line provides a splendid explanation of the incarnation of Jesus and what that means to his followers.

I know that subtitled movies aren't for everyone, but the cinematography in this movie is spectacular. The acting is wonderful, you forget you are watching actors and believe they are all men of God. Their struggle with doing what's right: for themselved, their faith, their friends, and their home, is epic. I don't know what I would do in the face of such adversity and unrest, but the story of these Trappist monks is inspirational and very much real one really knows how they will react if and when their faith, or beliefs, or safety are threatened. Go see it.
