    Peter Travers Rolling Stone

In between scenes of the muscleheads torturing their victim, Bay indulges his taste for treating women as sluts and grisly brutality as a nifty excuse for a cheap laugh. Pain and Gain is personal all right. You leave these characters with the distinct impression that they're Bay's kind of people. show more

    Peter Hartlaub San Francisco Chronicle

It's a homemade protein-and-steroids smoothie of a plot, combining elements of gore, self-parody, 1990s nostalgia overload and an attempt to say something -- while actually saying absolutely nothing -- about the American dream. show more

A badly constructed, blood-spattered caper that comes unglued early on. show more

Michael Bay's absurdist comedy is all pain, no gain and an utter monstrosity. It may be the most unpleasant movie I've ever seen, and I'm not forgetting "Freaks," which Pain & Gain resembles, come to think of it. show more

Yep, it's all fun and games until someone gets brutalized repeatedly. Before you can avert your eyes, it's Katie, bar the door and break out the chain saws. show more

Wahlberg and Johnson are the saving graces of an in-your-face movie. show more

The story is told in a hammer-on-anvil manner that evinces no gift for social satire or sharp cultural insight. show more

Bay blankets the film in a tone of smug self-awareness that obscures everything but its bald hypocrisy. show more

A dizzying lowlife saga that’s fast, smart, wicked, sort of ambitious and blazingly ironic. It’s as unpredictable as a Lindsay Lohan drive to the grocery store, as overstuffed as the pictures on Anthony Weiner’s Twitter feed and as hilarious as me on the bench press. show more

Even though Pain & Gain does indeed mine laughs from some very violent acts, there is nothing in this movie that glamorizes those three meatheads. Kudos to Bay and his screenwriters for making sure we’re laughing at them, not with them. show more

The worst movie I have seen in ten years, or more! No redeeming qualities, whatsoever.

An American style \"Snatch\" and \"Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels\" that did not work. Micheal Bay please stick to your fast paced blow everything up kind of movies, they somehow kinda work for you and stay away from Guy Ritchie style of movies, those do not work. This movie could have worked.

Imagine if Bad Boys were really the Bad Boys..then you get Pain and Gain...I definitely loved this movie. It had me laughing all the way through and the cast of characters was brilliant!

A fantastic show. The roles in this show are new ground for all the actors. It has a dark humor that is well written and funny. Dont expect the Rock or you will disappoint yourself the same way the critics have themselves. Johnson does a great job with this character, its funny and dark at the same time. Never a dull moment. Dont let anyone talk you out of going to this show! Its actually one of the best ones out right now. Just dont expect these guys to be who they have been in the past.

Funny movie in all the right places. Couldn\'t believe Wahlberg and the Rock were in this movie, but they gave it just the right touch. NOT a movie for kids. The end really shocked me. Surprised b/c I didn\'t realize it was a true story until the end. Can people be that STUPID? LOL

Not what I expected ! A lot of sick humour coupled with a disjointed theme.
