For a much stronger understanding of the Princess and her times read \"Unlucky Star\" by Pamela Jameson. The movie takes a mostly hackneyed and facile perception of her life.

@TheVisitor967 - You have the actress wrong. Keisha Castle Hughes was on Whale Rider. This actress is Q'orianka Kilcher who was in the New World. This movie does a good depiction of the forced annexation of Hawaii at gunpoint and their last heir's attempt to assist her people. For a smaller budget film, the filmmakers did an excellent job maximizing what they could to depict the era.

Considering this film was made on a shoestring budget, I thought it was the best it could have been. The actress who potrayed the Prncess was exceptional. (She received an Oscar nomination for her performance in The Whale Rider.) The cinematography was breathtaking. I often wondered how accurate the story was (as I do for most movies like this)--but it had its share of the good and bad guys

Over all, though, Princess Kaiulani plays like an old-fashioned, stiff but plushly upholstered costume drama, swaddled in gauzy cinematography and swelling strings. Full Review

As Kaiulani's story, it falls flat, having collapsed under the weight of the genre's mushier conventions. There are too many swooping violins, too many trite generalizations, too few moments that throw a light on history and turn it into art. Full Review

The film is too reverently drawn and self-consciously played to muster any real momentum. Full Review

This somber but unexceptional drama is luxurious to look at but never gripping. Full Review

A stirring romantic drama centering on the last royal heir to the native line of traditional monarchs. Full Review
