The simplicity of Michael Petroni’s script seems a drawback at first. But skilled director Brian Percival (Downton Abbey) slowly, effectively tightens the vise as evil intrudes into the life of this child. show more

    Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle

The resulting film has some wrong notes and touches of preciousness, but mostly it's a moving and effective presentation of life under Nazism, as seen from an unusual angle. show more

Then Death feels the need to intrude again. And again. If his accent weren't so charming, his voice so resonant, it would be depressing, all this meddling and mortality. show more

An embarrassing gut-punch of unfiltered schmaltz, but its sympathy for the devil-style humanism is well-meaning. show more

Really enjoyed this movie. It was a little slow, but the performances were so wonderful and the characters were so well-developed. I would really recommend this movie.

The film is moving but does not come close to the impact of the book, touching on subjects but not exploring them enough to give the same feeling desperation and loss. The casting however is spot on and the characters are exactly as I pictured.

I don't get ********* a boring, slow moving story about a boy and a girl. I kept waiting to see when something interesting would come along... Boo!

This is a wonderful movie. Looking at WWII from the eyes of a German child is novel and not the usual \"beat em off and blast em down\" shlock. The critics are wrong again. Bring your hanky and enjoy.

Forget the critics! This is a very real and touching story of a young child of war. The performances were steller. It made you feel as if you were there experencing the horror and hope never to have to be in a situation like that yourself. Its a tearful film so be prepared.

Great movie. Jeffery Rush was fantastic. One of the best films I have seen this year. I wish they would make more movies based on historical events (and do them accurately!!). This one was great!

The best movie I\'ve seen in a couple of years. Interesting that Hollywood seems to have snubbed it. But bring lots of tissues.
