Plot Summary

A family event movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.

  • In many ways a beautiful movie, and yet in other ways it’s not very good at all. As an achievement in stop-motion animation, it’s stunning — seamless and detailed, so perfectly done that it’s easy to forget that you’re witnessing skill and not magic. show more

  • The Boxtrolls hold their own on screen, too, and children will fall in love with the creatures' mischievous antics, gurgling language and tendency to use their boxes as both a disguise and a portable bedroom. show more

  • Kids who get a kick out of the macabre will enjoy this exquisitely crafted but tedious film. show more

Forget what the critics are saying about this movie. We highly advise you to see it. With the time and effort involved in the making of this picture, they deserve better. It is very good and well done. We are both in our 60's and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It is probably one of the best animation shows we've seen in a long time. Stay until the end of the show to see just how much went into the claymation, making the characters move, and the set they are on. We never go by what the critics say — always word of mouth. Take our word for it. Go see the movie.

Lovingly crafted. Heartfelt. Quirky. Great characters. Good story in the told in the manner and style of a fable. Surprised at the mediocre reviews.
