Immigrant is reportedly based on writer-director Barry Shurchin's own family history, but the story he's chosen to tell is so melodramatic and relentlessly grim that any passion he feels for the material isn't reflected onscreen. show more

Scenes can drag; they at times pay homage to the filmmaker's memories rather than drive the narrative forward. show more

    Ronnie Scheib Variety

The storyline develops so erratically that it lacks any internal momentum, with some scenes unfolding in exhaustive detail and others seemingly missing, as if whole chunks had been shot and later edited out. show more

In the end, the filmmaker’s message is nearly lost in this poorly constructed film. show more

Hope Cotillard gets an Oscar nod.

I strongly disagree with the critics. While the movie moves at a moderate pace, it adds to the emotions of the characters - the anguish, the unknown, the ugly truth, the sadness. The acting by Cottilard, Phoenix and Renner was top notch.

Ah, how some love to criticize great acting and superb direction. The Immigrant is a superb movie, but it may not please those who are looking for light entertainment. It tells a harsh and often ugly story that was so often reality in the hey day of European immigrants coming to America, to Ellis Island, to New York and to a new life. It's story is powerful and the cast are truly excellent.

All the critic's reviews below (all negative) are for A DIFFERENT FILM. This is a James Gray movie, not the Barry Shurchin movie with a similar name. This beautiful, touching film will lose an audience because of the carelessness of this website in posting reviews of a DIFFERENT film.
