    Peter Hartlaub San Francisco Chronicle

For such a torment-filled story, the ending is surprisingly satisfying, with an important message that a lesser filmmaker might have telegraphed too much. show more

For a well-acted movie about the horrors of war and the lure of revenge, it's surprisingly dull and starchy. show more

    Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal

Nothing if not ambitious, yet at war with itself stylistically. show more

Lean's classic is something of a picnic compared to The Railway Man, which contains horrific scenes of torture. show more

Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News

Admirable without being fully engaging. It’s too intelligent to dismiss, but not emotional enough to inspire lasting passion. show more

    David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter

The Railway Man is well-acted and handsomely produced, but its honorable intentions are not matched with sustained emotional impact or psychological suspense. show more

Suffers from a script that places dramatic emphasis in all the wrong places. show more

    Rex Reed New York Observer

Wrenching, profound and beautifully made, The Railway Man is one of the stunning don’t-miss surprises of the still-young 2014. show more

Sometimes The Railway Man is hard to watch. It’s also hard to imagine anyone watching it and not being deeply moved. show more

Even when the film's cheating, Firth refuses to tidy up the fictionalized Lomax's emotional state. The actor, so good at playing stalwart men contending with inner demons, can utter a simple line — "I don't think I can be put back together" — and break your heart, legitimately, without histrionics. show more

Good movie but as was said, hard to watch sometimes and a little slow at the beginning . See it!

five stars for an excellent film. Provokes some serious thinking about WAR..and what it does to servicemen. Traumatizes their brains, disfigures their bodies and often KILLS them. Why is peace so difficult? Colin Firth is outstanding.

Well-acted portrayal of British army officer Eric Lomax' true-life tale of torture and subsequent quest for revenge falls a bit short in within the script. Lomax' struggle to forgive should mirror the horrific torture he endured to capture the essence of his forgiveness.

Why isn't this movie playing in Palm Desert? I'm desparate to see it.
