One gut-busting death after another, terror giving way to tedium. Your call. show more

It's an imperfect facsimile, guilty of borrowing too many ideas from the earlier film, and then executing them with differing results. show more

    Scott Bowles USA Today

Part horror film, part space thriller and all gore-fest, the movie ends up being a lot like its protagonist: a mess of a monster that stretches itself too thin to scare much. show more

The best thing about The Thing, the third - and the least interesting - big-screen adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?", is its closing credits. show more

In terms of scares, this old-fashioned Thing is better than most new things. show more

Heijningen doesn't display the instinct of the best Hollywood action directors to give the audience what it craves at the big moments, except for a few gory in-your-face shots. show more

There are some body-horror gross-outs if you're into that sort of thing, but mostly what you get are a bunch of too-obvious leftovers from the "Alien" stockroom, including a selection of moist innards, slimy tendons, dripping fangs and the like. show more

While I wish van Heijningen's Thing weren't quite so in lust with the '82 model, it works because it respects that basic premise. And it exhibits a little patience, doling out its ickiest, nastiest moments in ways that make them stick. show more

It's a solid, entertaining monster movie that, at its best, recalls not only its three decades-old namesake but Alien as well. show more

Yes, it is derivative, but in a year in which films from the 1980s are getting needless remakes seemingly every other week, this one stands out as a rare one that works. That's a good "Thing." show more

Are you people retarded? This isn\'t a remake, its a PREQUEL!!!!! To the 1982 film. That\'s why they\'re chasing the dog in the end, where the 1982 movie started......

This is simply a remake of the original. The original with Kurt Russell is still as scary if not more than this film. Sorry! Not worth the money!

This is what should happen on a regular basis in Hollywood - a well done movie as follow up to a well done movie ( even if they are thirty years apart.) The 1982 \'Thing\' was an absolute masterpiece. This we Sci Fi fans all know. But when it was over we were wanting more. Something to explain how this alien got here and what happened to the Norwegians at their camp. Ok, so we had to wait thirty year but the wait was worth it. This 2011 \'prequel\' story is involving with a strong authenic feeling cast ( not overdone with mega star power) and just the right amount of creature moments to keep you on the edge. the astute SciFi fan recognizes aspects of the Norwegian experience in this movie from the hints left to us from the 1982 version. All in all - totally satisfying.

great movie and it did not really show too many like scenes from the prior movie in 1982. The thing used the same plot as before and it made it different with new twists and exciting moments.I loved this movie.

It\'s the same story as the original 1950\'s remake as well as the 1980\'s remake. However, I must say this is the best attempt yet due to the tremendous special effects, more suspense and a bit more \"plot\" added for those who like a bit of substance with their gore and aliens. We\'re not talking mind bending plot, but at least more so than the other two..*** Make sure you wait and watch through the credits at the end of the movie. It ALL comes together.. clever.*** Definitely worth seeing !

Some people don\'t realize this is the third remake of \"The Thing\" the first one was a 1950\'s movie and the 1980\'s was the second with Kurt Russell. I\'m sure the special effects in this newest version are the highlight of it all, and we know the story well from the second one...so I\'ll give it a shot and see what they did to hopefully make it \"better;.\" If not the SECOND one will always be my favorite!
