Though better than most of Perry's broad comedies, The Family That Preys still suffers from excessive predictability and mawkish sentiment, which detracts from the story's believability. show more

Was it just three years ago that Perry made his feature debut with "Diary of a Mad Black Woman?" Then his filmmaking was strictly amateur; now his sweeping pans and portentous closeups approach those of Pedro Almódovar. show more

Perry's notoriously overstuffed plots have sometimes been top-heavy, but this movie, like Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters," hangs on an elegant structure that doesn't feel forced. show more

An enjoyer of Tyler Perry's flicks, especially the relationship/family genre, "The Family that Preys" delivers on expectations. Characters are usually interesting, and that's the case here as well with Woodard & Bates stealing the show. However, there are interesting subplots, and while TP's work can be somewhat predictable and elementary occasionally, for me, it doesn't matter because the storylines work, they're clean and normally have redemptive value. Simply put, it's a relaxing and entertaining celluloid.

The movie was outstanding. TP did an excellent job in speaking to the many issues that impact the black family. The performances of the cast members were superb. This is a well written movie; the entire cast delivered great performances. Woodard and Bates especially delivered award winning performances. For me, it is always about the take-aways in TP's movies. This movie is no different, I learned so much; I want to be better and do better and care more and give more and live more and love more. TP's movies never disappoint
