South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho was the toast of the Cannes Film Festival this year, taking home the coveted Palme d'Or for his trippy thriller "Parasite."

Neon has dropped the first trailer for the film, which centers on two families — the aspirational Kims and the wealthy Parks. The two houses are brought together when the Kims' son becomes tutor the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms, where the Kims provide all sorts of services while the Parks bankroll their household.

But then, a "parasitic interloper" threatens the Kims’ sweet deal and a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out.

With films like "Okja" and "Snowpiercer," Bong has already established a reputation as an inventive, experimental director who mashes up genres into strange, emotionally resonant tableaus.

"Parasite" opens in theaters October 11.
