England's Prince Albert (Colin Firth) must ascend the throne as King George VI, but he has a speech impediment. Knowing that the country needs her husband to be able to communicate effectively, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) hires Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian actor and speech therapist, to help him overcome his stammer. An extraordinary friendship develops between the two men, as Logue uses unconventional means to teach the monarch how to speak with confidence.
Aspiring DJ Pete (Michael Begley) takes a job selling vacuums rather than allow his girlfriend, Sheila (Katy Cavanagh), to continue supporting them both as a stripper. His trainer is Tommy (Timothy Spall), a veteran door-to-door salesman struggling to keep his job against replacement online methods being pushed by Web consultant Uki (Caroline Ashley). Determined to win a prize for best sales, Tommy uses forceful and unethical methods to win over customers, appalling newcomer Pete.
