One of the most terrifying horror films in history, ‘The Exorcist’ has a new chapter in ‘The Exorcist: Believer.’ Nearly 50 years after the original film, director David Gordon Green (‘Halloween Ends’) helms the new film, with Leslie Odom Jr. (‘Glass Onion’, ‘Hamilton’) as the lead.

The trailer shows the parents of Angela (Lidya Jewett) and Katherine (Olivia Marcum) desperately searching for their missing daughters. The pair were found in the woods after three days with no memory of what happened. Once the girls are home, unnatural events begin to occur. Starting with small things like Angela appearing suddenly next to Victor, claiming he said something when he didn’t Eventually, the events got more horrifying as Katherine walked into the middle of a church service with what looked like bloodstains down the front of her dress, repeating the phrase in a feral voice, “The body and the blood.”

Determined to get to the bottom of things, Victor reaches out to the only person alive who has witnessed anything like this before - Chris MacNeil. Ellen Burstyn will reprise her icon role from the 1973 film. Chris explains to Victor the only way to help the girls is to perform the ritual of exorcism. It will take a tremendous effort, as Chris says, “Every culture, every religion, they all use different methods. It’s going to take all of them.”

This event will take Chris down memory lane in her own experience with her daughter Regan’s possession, “We’ve met before,” she says. The familiar score of “Tubular Bells” can be heard throughout the trailer. The return of Burstyn will surely delight fans of the original horror film, much similar to seeing Jamie Lee Curtis’ return as Laurie Strode in the new ‘Halloween’ trilogy.

Universal and Blumhouse revealed that this is the first film in a new trilogy. ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ will release on October 13, 2023. The next film, titled ‘The Exorcist: Deceiver’ will get a nationwide release on April 18, 2025.

Splitting franchise films into multiple parts seems to be the trend, as we saw this with the latest ‘Halloween’ trilogy, as well as with ‘Fast X,’ ‘Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One,’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'

The film also stars Ann Dowd (‘Hereditary’), Jennifer Nettles ('The Righteous Gemstones’) and Norbert Leo Butz (‘Flag Day’) as the parents of Katherine. The screenplay is written by Peter Sattler (‘Camp X-Ray’) and David Gordon Green, from a story by Scott Teems (‘Halloween Kills’), Danny McBride (‘Tropic Thunder’), and David Gordon Green, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty. The film is produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse and by David Robinson and James G. Robinson for Morgan Creek Entertainment. The executive producers are Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek, and Atilla Yücer.
