Peterson is best known for starring opposite Dempsey as his love interest in the 1987 comedy "Can't Buy Me Love." While Dempsey went on to find fame the next year with the hit film "Loverboy" -- and later his career was revived in 2005 with "Grey's Anatomy" -- Peterson stepped away from the camera in 1994 and lived a quiet life in Colorado.
She is survived by her second husband David Hartley and their two children.
Peterson's body was found July 5 at her home in Greeley, Colorado, though the cause of death has not been revealed. Her mother Sylvia told CNN that she suffered health issues. "It's a big loss," she said, explaining, "She had some medical problems with her heart but we don't know the cause yet."
