Producer Kathleen Kennedy has spent her Hollywood career as one of the only women in a male-dominated industry -- and she says that has to change.

“People in powerful positions are not trying hard enough and there are an alarming number of women who are not able to get those jobs,” Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, said Tuesday at "Fortune" magazine's Most Powerful Women Summit.

As for her own efforts, in the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" two-thirds of the executive story team is made up of women, though none of the "Star Wars" films -- past or announced -- has a female director.

But Kennedy adds: “I’m confident we will eventually hire a woman who directs a 'Stars Wars' movie."

The issue of gender inequality in Hollywood has intensified with a number of high-profile actresses speaking out. Most recently, Jennifer Lawrence this week blasted the movie business, questioning why she made less money than her "American Hustle" costars, while Salma Hayek received thunderous applause in a speech denouncing the treatment of women in the entertainment industry
