Plot Summary

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

  • Yes, the sets and costumes elicit swoons, but it's the peerless Sondheim score, however truncated, that makes this Woods a prime destination. show more

  • Faithful but not slavishly faithful to the source, the movie retains most of the songs but streamlines the story, particularly in the second half. show more

  • The notion that children are raised on fairy tales and the question of how those early stories affect us all — even into adulthood — remains fascinating and is delivered here with visual panache and musical flair. show more

Major let down. Previews are sometimes no indication of how a movie is really going to be. The movie seemed to drag on and on. Johnny Depps character creeped me the hell out. Meryl always does a magnificent job. She's the only good aspect of the movie. The giants were weird and I really don't understand why they mushed all those fairy tales together...one giant mess. Not suitable for children.

I agree with another reviewer that would have been happy with the "happy ending"...but noooo...they had to take it back into the woods and ruin it. The ending was gloomy and depressing and made the movie that much longer than it should have been. Johnny Depp was creepy like a pedophile and red riding hood was a little annoying, but if they had ended it at the wedding it probably would not have sucked as bad in my opinion. I want my money and my 2 hours back.
