    Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle

For about an hour of its running time, The Magic of Belle Isle seems like a tiresome, sentimental and slow-moving story about a grumpy old man redeemed by the sweet spirit of a rural town and by the nice family that lives next door. But no, it's even worse than that. show more

As sticky-sweet and textureless as a bowl of pudding, though an amused central performance from star Morgan Freeman continually finds nuance and the unexpected where there ultimately isn't any. show more

The Magic of Belle Isle is a warm, human, feel-good experience about bringing out the best in people, one that brings out Morgan Freeman's best performance in years. show more

Even in an underwritten role, the delightful Madsen shines in her best performance since her comeback role in "Sideways." show more

This gooey reteaming of Rob Reiner and Morgan Freeman is crammed tight with baldly manipulative elements, its tearjerker quota busting at the seams. show more

Reiner has crafted the perfect summer film in The Magic Of Belle Isle. No, not one with a lot of noise and battles and comic book heroes, but rather a wonderfully laid back family story set around a gorgeous lake, about the everyday problems of real people from 7 to 70. show more

Though the story's wrapped-with-a-bow finale is never in doubt-ol' Meathead remains a populist, pandering Hollywood man through and through-Belle Isle still manages to cast enough of an enchanting spell. show more

Freeman is back in Reiner's latest, The Magic of Belle Isle, which has all the pathos and saccharine of "The Bucket List" but little of the humor. It's earnest, predictable and disposable. show more

A crotchety, alcoholic, wheelchair-bound coot played on cruise control by Morgan Freeman learns these recycled lessons in a pastel-colored, embroidered wall-hanging of a drama directed by Rob Reiner. show more

Stephen Holden The New York Times

Ms. Madsen, radiant and tousled, without a trace of narcissism, conveys maternal devotion, undaunted courage and a serene sensuality. Real, if idealized, grown-ups: We haven't seen them much in the movies lately, but here they are. show more

One of the best Socially Redeeming movies I have seen in years. Mr. Freeman , as far as I am concerned, has never been in a movie, that didn\'t allow me to be disappointed in any way. He , himself, is an example of a \"Socially Redeeming\" Man. I met Mr. Freeman, by chance, in a little town where filming was being done, and his was a gracious, kind, considerate person, of the locals. And welcomed their presence.

This movie is fantastic! Morgan Freeman does it again; playing a stellar leading character that captivates the audience while teaching a lesson in transformation. All rest of the cast equally does an amazing job with great acting that warms the heart and inspires the soul. I would highly recommend this movie to everyone of all ages; it\'s a real family movie. Don\'t listen to the critics and SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!

This is a very good movie, the kind where you come out of the threatre feeling good, relaxed, contented and know that your money was not wasted. Every day life told in many ways each person can relate to in some way. The cast did a great job.

I\'m \"Freemaned\" out. OK actor, but he is in everything you see. Need a new face in some of these movies. Like Ben Affleck, Charlie Sheen, etc, seem to be the same guy in every character.
