Plot Summary
Ben Kleinman (Paul Reiser) gets a surprise visit from his father, Sam (Peter Falk), who shows him a vague note from his mother indicating that she's left, and Sam has no idea where she's gone. While Ben's sisters mobilize in an effort to find their mother, he and Sam decide to hit the open road together. After looking at a farmhouse that Ben and his wife are considering buying, father and son continue traveling, sleeping outdoors, venting old frustrations -- and ultimately bonding.

  • So powerful and tender are the scenes between Falk and Dukakis that by movie's end, I was wishing that the film had been more about the marriage of Sam and Muriel and less about the father and son. show more

  • Avoids easy shtick and saccharine conclusions, opting instead for character dynamics that the two leads deliver with consummate skill. show more

  • The movie is sort of a sideways version of "Sideways," even down to a scene where the two men join two women for dinner. The difference is, in "Sideways" the guys desperately want to impress the women, and in The Thing About My Folks, they want to impress each other. show more

    Love, love, love this movie - realistic, entertaining, great acting and has a lot to *say* - funny and poignant. :)
