"How did it come to this?" asks the "Mary Queen of Scots" trailer.

Universal Pictures released the film's first international trailer (and second overall) on Thursday, Oct. 4, and it shows the complicated rivalry between Mary, Queen of Scots (Saoirse Ronan), and Elizabeth, Queen of England (Margot Robbie). The preview shows the ups and downs of their relationship, and let's just say there was no shortage.

The two queens only meet in only one scene,  but it's an intense one, as the trailer shows. Ronan recently revealed that they were "blubbering like idiots" as they filmed it. Having seen it, we're not surprised.

While the queens' rivalry is a major part of the film, we see that other threats to Mary's crown as well that ultimately led to her downfall.
