The book "East of the Mountains" is being adapted to film, and two award-winning actors are on board.
Mira Sorvino and Tom Skerritt have taken starring roles, Deadline reports. They'll play the father and daughter at the center of David Guterson's 1999 novel. Guterson, who is also known for writing the book "Snow Falling on Cedars," teamed up with Thane Swigart on the screenplay. SJ Chiro is the director.
"East of the Mountains" is about a dying man who decides to end his life on his terms, unbeknownst to his daughter. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Ben (Skerritt) goes on a final hunt with his dogs. However, on his trip, his memories and encounters with people lead him to question his journey.
Sorvino is an Academy Award winner for her role in "Mighty Aphrodite." She is also well-known for "Norma Jean & Marilyn" and more recently had a recurring role in the Audience series "Condor." Meanwhile, Merritt is an Emmy winner for the series "Picket Fences" and memorably starred in "M*A*S*H*" and "Top Gun." His most recent films are "Lucky" and "Day of Days."
"East of the Mountains" will begin filming in Seattle and Washington's Columbia Plateau later this month. Guterson, Jane Charles, Mischa Jakupcak, and Jennessa West are the producers, and Stephen G. Hall and Eliza Shelden are executive producing.
