Aaron Cowan Biography

Aaron Cowan is a visual effects producer at Wētā FX. He began his journey in visual effects working as a VFX coordinator on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Over time, he took on roles across production, including studio-side VFX production management on films such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Waterhorse.

Before joining Wētā FX in 2009, he had also worked client-side and on-set in production roles. At Wētā FX, Cowan started as a sequence manager on Avatar (2009) and advanced through positions such as production manager on The Adventures of Tintin (2011) and digital producer on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). As a VFX producer, he has overseen major projects including The Last of Us (2023) and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), as well as Moon Knight (2022).

His work on The Last of Us involved creatures, environments, and set extensions across the season, contributing to Wētā’s visual effects output in that television series. In Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Cowan was credited as VFX producer, working on the creation of hundreds of shots involving Transformers and the Maximals’ home world.

Cowan’s commitments include fostering efficient collaboration between VFX vendors and production teams, aiming for creative and logistical alignment in high-complexity projects. His contributions have earned him nominations from the Hollywood Professional Association. In 2023, he was nominated for the HPA Award for Outstanding Visual Effects – Theatrical Feature for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, shared with Matt Aitken, Mike Perry, Kevin Estey, and Jong Jin Choi.

In the same year, he was also nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects – Episode or Series Season for The Last of Us (Season One), sharing the credit with Simon Jung, David Hampton, Dennis Yoo, and Ben Roberts.
