Plot Summary

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

  • Yes, the sets and costumes elicit swoons, but it's the peerless Sondheim score, however truncated, that makes this Woods a prime destination. show more

  • Faithful but not slavishly faithful to the source, the movie retains most of the songs but streamlines the story, particularly in the second half. show more

  • The notion that children are raised on fairy tales and the question of how those early stories affect us all — even into adulthood — remains fascinating and is delivered here with visual panache and musical flair. show more

This movie is very good, however, I couldn't wait for it to end. The story is not interesting, though very well acted and colorful.

This movie was very hard to sit through. It was too long. The songs were too long. It was repetitive, and the blind step sisters were ridiculous. The kissing scene with the prince and the baker's wife was unnecessary. It didn't even represent a fairy tale, and it was not good for all the kids in the audience to see. My daughter didn't even like the movie very much.

Worst movie I can recall seeing recently. I tried napping through it eventually but the songs kept waking me up. There is only about 7 minutes without singing in the whole movie, and the songs didn't do anything for me. I'm guessing I'm not the right audience, but the kid and two other people I watched it with also used words like painful to describe it. After the first six hours of long monotonous songs I thought it was over, only to find out there was a second half to it. The funniest parts were when people cheered when it was finally over. I've seen lots of mediocre movies, but this was the only one I've felt compelled to ask for my money back on it was so disappointing. There seemed to be a long line of others doing the same thing. They might want to mention in the trailer that it is a musical
