    Amy Biancolli San Francisco Chronicle

The movie turns lighter and less morose as it rolls along, which is good for viewers who prefer a bit of honey to offset the bitter taste of hormones. show more

    Claudia Puig USA Today

Though it doesn't fully resonate as a romance, it is effective as a character study. show more

Joe Neumaier New York Daily News

Well-meaning but dreadfully executed movie. show more

    The Hollywood Reporter

There's just not enough going on behind actor Freddie Highmore's eyes to convince us this kid's existential angst is real. show more

    Michelle Orange Movieline

I found myself forgetting The Art of Getting By as it unfolded, as though the Looney Tunes art department were two steps behind the characters, rolling up the scenery like so much carpeting. show more

    Rex Reed New York Observer

Has more charm and wit than most of its J.D. Salinger-inspired cousins in the same genre, and is undeniably engaging. show more

    Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times

Pleasant and well-acted and easy to watch. show more

    Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Yet notwithstanding its derivative dolefulness and PG-13 timidity, The Art of Getting By is smart and sweet enough to become the favorite film of some Midwestern adolescent who wrongly believes he's already seen the dark side. show more

The glibness of Wiesen's freshman effort wouldn't be a problem if the wit was there. show more

A movie that was partly good, your average teen movie with good stars like Emma Roberts but I felt bored because it was just too averqage. I\'m out!

This was absolutely the worst movie I have ever seen. The plot is terrible, the acting was about on par for a middle school play camp, the soundtrack did not match up with the emotions. If you are a girl wanting to see this movie, fine, but if you are considering taking your boyfriend, don\'t, he won\'t like you after it, well he may still like you, but he will never take your judgements with weight anymore. If your looking for a movie filled with divorce, family issues, teenage sex, drinking, finding yourself with misguided \"wisdom\" then this is the movie for you!
