The drama "Ma Ma," starring Penelope Cruz as a single mom named Magda facing a grim medical diagnosis, was acquired at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be distributed for American audiences.

“I am thrilled to have ‘Ma Ma’ released in the U.S.,” director Julio Medem said in a statement, according to The Wrap. “Magda is a strong woman that when confronted with illness responds with unbelievable inner strength. I’m excited it will reach a U.S. audience because its message is international and Penelope’s acting really special.”

"Ma Ma," on which Cruz is also a producer, premieres Sept. 15 at Toronto. It was acquired by Oscilloscope Laboratories.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Oscilloscope," adds Cruz. "This movie is so important to me and they are the perfect partner for the project."
